Where is the Governor in a Lawn Mower?
Q. My friend and I are wanting to turn my old toro lawn mower into a racing one... But i do not know where th governor is... if you can explain where it is that would be nice... my engine is a 8hp briggs and station pull start... thx

A. The governor may be internal. Look at the carb. If the governor is external it will be on the carb and easy to see. Maybe try this site and let me know. fixya.com/briggs I have a thirty yr. old Kohler on a 1200 cub cadet that I am making a puller out of. Need some advice and opinions from other guys. Good luck

A. remove and change the pulley on the shaft for a smaller one may need to put new belt on . then disconnect the governor and your in business. you wont destroy if you use a bit of self restraint and remove the blades if will run without as could be dangerous if tipped up while blades spinning around there you go.

Do I need lead substitute for an old Briggs and Stratton Engine?
Q. I parked my dad's old 1971 Homelite Beast of a Snowblower with 8hp Briggs and Stratton in the barn back in 1993. My nephew and I drug it out last month. We aired the tires, changed the oil, cleaned the carb, and put in new points & condenser. We set the choke, one pull and can you believe it? It took right off just the way it did when dad brought it home 38 years ago! Seriously, this thing runs really strong just like new. Only thing, all fuel was leaded in 1971. I am wondering if we should be using a lead additive? Maybe just burn premium?
Asked by Johnny D - Sun Nov 1 18:28:16 2009 - Maintenance & Repairs - 9 Answers - Comments

A. Try it without the lead substitute and see how it runs. Plenty of old cars around that were built in the leaded gas era run fine with unleaded gas.

Riding lawn mower will start but if I put it in drive or take it out of idle it will die any ideas?
Q. I have a IH cub cadet 282 with a Briggs and Stratton 8hp motor. I rode it around for a little and it ran great, then it ran out of gas so i filled it up then this happened. I can start it but if i put it in drive, reverse, or increase the speed it will die, any ideas?

A. these things have all kind of safety switches now,, so if any of these goes bad or is activated it will die.. there is one under the seat and if you get up it will kill the engine,, there is one on the lever that you use to get the pulleys to the blades started,, etc etc,, all these need to be working right...

I have a 8hp model 191707-2181-01 briggs&stratton no spark does this motor have points?
Q.
Asked by Robert C - Sun May 31 08:56:03 2009 - Maintenance & Repairs - 4 Answers - Comments

A. No points. Your engine has an ignition module that is triggered by magnets in the flywheel. Make sure the black wire leading to it is not grounded. Grounding that wire is how the engine shuts off normally with the switch so, if it's grounded all the time, you'll have no spark. Otherwise, check the plug wire and if that's good the ignition module is probably bad.

free 8hp briggs & stration carb settings?
Q. i need to know how to set the needle valvs and float
Asked by carter - Mon Jul 11 14:33:57 2011 - Boats & Boating - 1 Answers - Comments

A. hold the carb body upside down, and gently bend the float tab until the float hangs parallel with the carb body. gently seat the slow speed needle then back it out 1 1/2 turns or so. start the engine and set the throttle to where it will just stay running. start turning the needle in, 1/4 turn or so at a time, giving the motor time to adjust. when you turn the needle in, RPMs will go up. lower the throttle to where it will just stay running. soon you will hit the point where turning the needle in any further will make the motor sputter maybe mildly backfire. back it out a little, and fine tune it to find the smoothest running. After this, you shouldn't need to change that setting until the next carb rebuild.

7.8hp briggs and stratton ohv valve vent hose?
Q. I installed new larger lifters and the valve cover wont fit down flush now. I can make it sit flush if I remove the inner guard inside the valve cover that leads to the vent hose? Looks like a piece of sheet metal siliconed onto the top area of the overhead valve cover. Can oil get into this vent hose? Where exactly does the vent hose go? Someone said it would be fine as they THOUGHT it went back to the crankcase but was wanting to make for sure from someone who knew. I have searched for the exact lifters but not one place I went to had them or could order them. I have a 14hp kohler motor and the lifters were identical fit, just a little taller and thicker. I figured since this motor is on a generator and runs constant (Alot of hours) that… [cont.]

A. the vent hose just vents to the air, remove the inner guard, have the hose pointing up, try it, its just a pressure release, on the lifter area,

Can I add compression to a small horizontal 8hp briggs?
Q. So I started taking apart this old (but hardly used) generator engine today when I realized that the crank lost some of its "kick-back". Did I lose compression in the engine? And if I did, how can I get it back? This is a learning project I've undertaken and I don't want to give up on the motor just yet.
Asked by David G - Sat Dec 29 01:15:58 2007 - Maintenance & Repairs - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Those motors are tough as can be... you should not have to worry about it not turning over as hard anymore and even if it lost a little compression, I bet it has many many more hours on it. If you want more compression you could: - replace the piston with a slightly domed one. - Maching the head down a few thousanths of an inch. -Replace the piston rings and hone the cylinder smooth and scratchless. If oyu raise the compession you might need to run higher octane fuel to prevent pre-ignition and engien damage. I think your best bet is to keep that motor stock for best reliability.

Q. my 8 horse power briggs and straton engine from my chipper shredder is spewing smoke out the exaust and i have determined that it is worn out piston rings. Before I tear into the engine I want to know what tools I will need to finish the installation of the rings. I have the normal tools ( sockets and wrenches) how much do you think this will cost and what tools do i need?

A. You will need the following tools in repairing and replacing rings on your 8 hp Briggs and stratton engine. 1) ring compressor part number 19230 2) piston ring expander part number 19340 Also measure cylinder bores for proper fit. You can price them at ring ex panders at $9.25- $14.50 piston ring compressors at $5.95-$6.95 piston ring groove cutter $11.75- 16.75 Honer for cylinder walls which you can use with drill press $17.95 replacement stones are $4.95 Try www.foley-belsaw.com for tools. I'm been repairing small engines for 30 years. Make sure you get the ring expander so you don't break the rings they can be very brittle in handling them. Make sure your cylinder walls are very smooth so the rings don't get caught by uneven or carbon… [cont.]

I have a 8HP Briggs and Stratton engine on a generator. Less than 5 hrs use. Gas is filling up the crankcase.?
Q. The generator runs fine under full load until the gas/oil mix starts to come back through the breather port into the carb, then it sputters. The float and needle valve in the carb looks good, how is the gas getting into the base?
Asked by NFLD - Sat Jan 17 17:08:43 2009 - Maintenance & Repairs - 5 Answers - Comments

A. Its hard to believe the thing runs well under full load when there are issues in the carb. I have seen fuel in the crankcase, but this is normally caused by the tank fuel valve left open when not in use. I would drain the oil completely and fill with fresh oil. Start the generator and load to full load, use an amp-probe to verify your not overloading. With a voltmeter verify voltage. With a frequency meter verify engine speed is producing a frequency between 60 to 62.5 hz. If machine is running too fast it could possibly cause this problem. If all else fails try a new carb, depending on your particular model carbs can cost as low as 30 dollars to as high as 150 dollars.

A. Could be the condenser, sounds like the voltage just isn't enough to jump the spark plug even though you can feel a voltage, it's not enough for a fat spark. depending on the type of magneto there may be an igniton coil, if not it will be the magneto itself. Have you correctly reattached and ground connections removed when you changed the gasket. Is the spark plug gap small enough? They need to be adjusted for smaller engines.

A. clean it up, replace the bolt and then you will get the best price, start a little high and you can negotiate from there. Hard to put a actual value on it, If someone need it bad that would be a big plus.

How To Remove A Stuck Threaded Briggs And Stratton Exhaust?
Q. Hi i have an old briggs 8hp that im working on. I tore it down a couple of days ago but the exhaust doesn't want to budge. I've tried WD40, and it still doesn't want to move. I want to get it out so I have more room to clean up the exhaust ports and smooth them out. Also, the lock nut has been broken off so I know that is not the problem. What should I do?
Asked by Josh - Tue Sep 21 11:18:36 2010 - Maintenance & Repairs - 4 Answers - Comments

A. if there's enough pipe, use pb blast spray let it sit a bit then put a pipe wrench on it&spin it off if you use heat&its a bolt, remember if the bolts are close to the exhaust port, heat can get to there&it will expand the pipe making it impossible to get off.

Problem with an 8HP Briggs and Stratton Engine?
Q. Our riding lawn mower has been out of service for a few years. I recently took apart the engine and found the head gasket was broken and pieces were missing, so i assumed this was the problem. I replaced the head gasket, spark plug, changed the oil. When i try to start it, it wont turn over than it gets a winding out noise without the enging turning. And then it starts rapidly clicking. Could this be a starter issue? Any Ideas?
Asked by blueyedwakeboarder - Mon Apr 28 12:11:07 2008 - Maintenance & Repairs - 4 Answers - Comments

A. Sounds like a low battery.. You can use jumper cables directly to the starter if your careful. Or to the weak battery. Also check the pinion gear on top of the starter, they are plastic and get worn. They are easy to replace and cost about $5.00

A. I'm thinking that problem could be with in the fuel mixture or the area between plug & wiring. I'm not sure if "timing" is off as to where it should be - what sites that I've looked at with some engines talk about using a "timing gun".. Will try to work further on this and try to get back with you if I discover anything esle as far as info. 03-Nov-07 @ 1:20 PM EDT ___ 2nd Reply...
