What do I do about the torque converter bolts that have come loose and won't go in or out on my 1971 vw bug?
Q. The Torque converter bolts on my 71 beetle have come loose and we can't get them out or in should we drop the entire engine and tranny get them removed and put new ones in? Also should the nuts on the back of the flexplate be welded on originally because they are loose?

A. I would think the bolt holes were taapped into the flexplate, this part has to be balanced, but that is where the the problem is, not the bolts. Replace the plate and bolts

Q. When working on a car, how important is it to torque bolts to their specifications?
Asked by Z3ph4r - Sun Jul 26 20:59:41 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It is very important. 1.To make sure the component is not over stressed and causing premature part failure and warpage. 2.To make sure torque is evenly distributed at all spots of the component being installed. 3.Thread size is also only rated to a certain strength.Beyond its potential can and will result in broken bolts or stripped threads. So its better to be safe and sorry.Taking longer the first time and doing it right is better then doing it wrong twice. So I dont advice using "german torque"good-n-tite

Q. cylinder base bolts torque values for 0235 l2c?
Asked by scgraphx1 - Sat Feb 18 20:58:47 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If you're rebuilding an engine for aviation use, you'll need a licensed mechanic to sign off the work and certify it as airworthy. I'm sure a licensed mechanic wouldn't be using this forum to ask about the correct torque values on a critical component of that engine. Therefore, my advice to you would be to leave it alone until you have that licensed mechanic check your work and advise you on the rebuild. Aviation engines are not toys. If it quits working in flight, you can't just pull over to the side of the road and call AAA to come tow you home. Make sure it's done right. Your life depends on it.

did i not torque the pressureplate bolts tite enough on exceedy clutch replacement on 98 civic?
Q. clutch acts like it is not clutching pressure plate. I can put tranny in gear with pedal in or out. release clutch pedal no power transmitted to drive axles. It worked great for the first 4 blocks then went limp. I'm going to go back in and retorque bolts. i had flywheel machined. do bolts on pressure plate control mating of clutch and pressureplate?
Asked by injunjo265_jg - Fri Jul 11 21:23:35 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It could be the throwout bearing fork that actually engauges and disengauges the clutch, But all the other answers that I've read are very likely also. Usually the pressure plate bolts won't all be able to be reinstalled if it is on wrong, because the bolt holes won't lineup all the way around the plate. But I don't know that type of car very well either, I have had this happen to a 1995 dodge neon. Good Luck

A. Well since your pulling the whole thing apart anyway to double check your timing belt ( Most likely moved 5 degrees when you released the tensioner) you may as well replace the head bolts. Chrysler sells them for about a buck a piece. Get the correct bolts. Get a good torque wrench and do it correctly this time. You have to make sure the timing marks line up completely other wise it will be a no go. Also you may also have to reset the computer or get an OBD II to put the computer back in to relearn mode. (YES you have to do this, ASK Chrysler) when you get the timing belt tensioned rotate the engine by hand. The crank with rotate 2 times for every 1 rotation of the cam shaft. Be very careful and make sure the marks line up prior to… [cont.]
