How to torque a Briggs and Stratton head?
Q. I fixed a stuck valve on a 5 hp Briggs and Stratton motor and I would like to know what to torque the head bolts to. Anybody know this? I am guessing about 20. The stare pattern I am aware of, the number is all I need. I think everyone has given me a good idea. Thanks.

A. 5 hp briggs If 5/16" head bolts torque 25 Ft/Lb if Commercial version with 3/8" head bolts torque to 35 Ft Lbs. In either case follow a criss-cross rotating pattern first gently snugging the bolts, then tightening to 3/5ths of the final torque, finally tightening them to full torque and then torque at spec one more time.

How do I fix a briggs and stratton 5hp that wont keep running unless I keep pumping the primer?
Q. I have a briggs and stratton 5 HP engine that wont keep running unless I keep pumping the primer 30 or so times after after it starts. After pumping the primer it will run fine. What do I have to do to fix this?
Asked by Burt - Wed Feb 3 21:17:20 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Sounds like the carburetor is having trouble getting the gas to the engine. I would suggest that you properly clean the carb and put in a rebuild kit.

How do you check timing on briggs engine?
Q. My 15.5 Briggs backfires when cranking. The engine usually cranks and runs fine after it starts. Any suggestions ?
Asked by barryas1 - Sun Apr 4 21:39:46 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. To check the timing, you will have to take the blower housing off, and remove the flywheel nut. There is a key that holds the flywheel in place with the crankshaft. If this is a riding mower, it would be a very rare occurrence to shear the key. More than likely, you have a valve problem. If OHV the valves may need adjustment. If not, you may have a worn lobe on the cam.

A. On the front of the engine is a cover with four bolts. Take off the cover and have someone turn the engine over for you. You should see the valves moving (opening and closing). If they don't move when the valve springs go up and down then you have a valve problem. XX

How to change oil in Briggs & Stratton lawnmower?
Q. i have a 5.25hp/21 inch briggs & stratton self-propelled lawn mower. I need to find out how to change the oil. It has a straight pipe that goes straight to the mower

A. Thats the dipstick, yes you can drain the oil out there, get a drain pan, take the dipstick out, tip the mower over carefully, and drain it. This doesn't get all the oil out though, there's a plug at the bottom of the engine (under the deck) that you put a ratchet (without the socket) into, lifting them up on blocks works for me, slip a container underneath, take the drain plug out and let the oil drain till it stops, put the plug back in tight. NOW, the engine takes 20 ounces of oil maximum... not a whole quart... if you still have the original 18 ounce oil bottle that came with it, fill that up with any name brand HD-30 weight. Thats a high detergent straight 30 above 40 degrees F. Use 5w-30 or 10w-30 conventional below 40. OR use a 5w-3 [cont.]

A. Youd need the motor numbers off the flywheel shroud/engine block - a local tractor parts place can get a 'parts kit' for it - including gaskets, o rings, sometimes a float, needlevalve- ect, usually runs in the $20-30 range. Heres a parts breakdown diagram site - look up motor numbers under briggs & stratton :

How can my Myers-Briggs results help me in college and in the future?
Q. I took the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test and scored ISFJ. How can I use these results to help me in college and in choosing a career?

A. The Myers-Briggs test tells you your unconscious preferences. You prefer introversion, sensing, feeling, and judging. But really, the best way to pick a major/career is through your conscious preferences. What do you like to do? What are you good at? Those should be your main questions. That said, ISFJ suggests you might enjoy a career like carpentry, welding, or architecture.

A. You'll need to contact the firm handling the class action lawsuit and jump on board if you want to get your money back; most likely you won't recieve your entire invesmtent back, however if they settlement is in favor of the plaintiffs and the company has enough assets you might get most of it back. Best of luck!

Is there a link between your horoscope sign and your Myers-Briggs Jung personality type?
Q. Is your Myers-Briggs - Jung personality type somehow related to your zodiac sign and the attributes ot your sign? Mine is for instance INTP and I'm an Aquarius sun, Scorpio rising and Capricorn moon. Are those somehow related? A. Myers-Briggs Jung is a psychological test. Astrology has to do with how a person thinks, behaves, and reacts to things, just based on astrological beings. Although they are not supposed to be interrelated, a lot of things can be linked together when talking about personalities of people. I'm an ISFP, Cancer sun, Cancer rising, and Aries moon. I'm also interested if anyone else has any links between the two. :)

A. , timing wise, when its disassembled, there should be a mark on both the camshaft gear, and the crankshaft gear, shaped like a little triangle or tear drop, they should be aligned on top of crank to bottom of cam, i e,, like a colon on the key board ( : ) what will also help, is to checkout a copy of small engine repair from the library i think manual is from haynes after the engine assembled, as far as running smooth you'll have to adjust the carb

A. I'm sure it's possible to build something to fit, but I don't think that the engine will put out enough exhaust pressure to turn the turbine fast enough to give you any benefit, also your engine is probably fairly high compression so you may overboost it, if it does work.
