How do I take out a briggs crankshaft?
Q. I need to remove the crankshaft from a 8hp briggs engine so that my friend can add a keyway for me (the engine was made for a generator - no clutch). I can't find anything online so far, and I'm afraid that if I start hacking away I'll compromise the engine's integrity somehow. Any tips would be appreciated.

A. First, you will need to remove the engine shroud with the pull rope attached and remove the flywheel. You will need a puller to get the flywheel off. Then, if you look at the output side of the engine, you should be able to see where the crankcase separates. Remove the screws that hold the crankcase together and split the crankcase (of course remember to drain the oil first.) You can use a couple of screwdrivers to separate the case, keeping in mind that it is probably aluminum and will scratch easily. You will have to file the scratches at reassembly. Now you should be able to see the connecting rod for the piston. Mark the bearing cap (which holds the rod on from the bottom) so you know it goes back in the same way. Then remove… [cont.]

How can I increase the hp of a Briggs and Stratton, without opening the engine?
Q. I have an older MTD riding mower with an 11hp Briggs that does not have enough power to run the blades and drive the tractor. I don't have a lot of money to spend on repairs or replacement of the engine or mower.
Asked by Paul M - Thu May 1 23:55:01 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are a number of things you can do to help your older mower. An 11hp mower should have enough power unless you are attempting to cut grass and bushes too large for the machine. Remove and inspect the belt or belts. Worn belts will slip causing loss of power. While the belt is off turn the blades by hand to see that they turn freely. Worn spindles can bind and reduce power. Check the blades for damage and keep them sharp. Dull blades take more power to cut the grass. Clean the air filter if needed. I have a Craftsman 11hp mower that still works well because I maintain it. All machinery needs a little TLC. Good luck.

Can your results on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator change with time?
Q. I have a friend who took the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator twice, with several years in between. His results were different. My friend, who is in grad school for Psychology, says this is impossible and a person's results should remain constant throughout his or her life (assuming, of course, that the person is beyond a certain age when he or she takes the test). Can your results change with age?

A. I believe so, or they weren't honest with themselves one of the times. But that's why you hear of "some people change" I think. IDK, my guy friend was doing a paper on it, and says if you throw yourself in a different situation for an "x" amount of time, your mind will learn to cope with your surrounding environment, thus enabling you to think different, which makes the way you are different.

Q. How do i clean valves on my 8hp briggs engine?
Asked by dom - Fri Mar 13 16:27:43 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Start mixing a valve cleaner in with your fuel. You can get it at any auto parts store. Remember that it's formulated for a car's tank size so use only a fraction with each tank. Use premium gas only. It will take a while but it will slowly burn the crud off the valves.

Can i use Ngk spark plug in honda and briggs&stratton lawn mower?
Q. the NGK spark plug for the Briggs&Stratton will be similar to Rj19lm will this cause any harm?

A. take the spark plug to your nearest dealer and find out what spark plug options you have, but I think I have seen those in Briggs and Hondas alike. If there is a NGK replacement available, you certainly can use it without causing any harm.

A. Its very simple, follow your throttle cable from the top to where it connects to the carbeurator. It should be mounted on a swivel plate, the plate contains an extra small hole , that is where the gov. spring connects.Be sure you have the proper spring, or it may not open up as it supposed to,or shut off as needed.THe carb. housing may also be covered by a plastic cover,or guard. This is a simple do -it -yourselfer.Or go to b and stratton .com for tech support

Should I use briggs and stratton barnd of synthetic motor oil or other name brand of synthetic car oil?
Q. I have a briggs and stratton 11hp motor and want to use synthetic motor oil and I want to know what kind would be better to use the name brand of briggs and stratton synthetic 5w-30 oil or another brand like quaker state ?

A. Any same-type (synthetic or otherwise, as per engine manufacturer's specification) gas-engine oil having the same API rating (5W 30) produced by a well-known brand will do. In an emergency any motor oil will do (even a mix), but change back to the right one ASAP. It is more important to check the level and renew at least as required by B&S, more often for heavy duty work and/or harsh environmental conditions. hth

Does a Briggs fuel filter prevent water from reaching carburetor?
Q. Apparently my fuel has water in it due to condensation. When removing the Briggs fuel filter, water poured out of it. Did the filter "shut down" the flow so water did not reach carb? Related question: is is adequate to drain bottom portion of fuel tank until no water is visible in the liquid being draned. I'd rather not have to dispose of the entire batch of gasoline if all the water collected at the bottom as would be expected.
Asked by tenacity9 - Sat Sep 2 11:30:15 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sorry, the filter does not separate water from fuel. And yes, you should be OK with draining the water at the bottom of the tank. One thing to keep in mind however, is flushing the entire fuel system. Pump, carb. bowl, fuel lines. Check your gas can too... If it sat for a long time with water in the carburator it may need to be rebuilt do to water corrosion. if this is a 14hp. or less, use a 1\2" socket to drop the carburator bowl and allow fuel to drain untill clear. If it's a V-twin, you mat have to use a 9\16" socket to remove the drain nut on the side of the carburator and do the same thing.

A. If it is a hydrostatic rear end it is not user serviceable, if it is hydro take it to the shop & be ready to replace the drive unit which is a hydraulic pump motor combination.

Briggs and Stratton, gas pooring from carburetor?
Q. I have a 4 Horse Power Briggs and Stratton push mower, that I bought from some maroon that didn't keep up will with it. I flushed the engine oil, cleaned the filter, and sharpend the blades. I got one good start out of it and then it flooded. Gas literaly started pooring from the carburetor.
Asked by eleven-eleven investigations - Tue Jun 24 20:32:03 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The float valve in the carburetor is not closing. The best thing to do is to remove the carb, take it apart and clean it. Put it back together with a rebuild kit. The kit will have a new float valve and all the gaskets.
