What happens if i pull off 1 spark plug wire off of briggs&stratton v twin engine?
Q. What will happen please explain carefully for 10pts

A. You will intentionally cause a misfire on that cylinder. There is no spark to ignite the fuel and the engine begins to run rougher. No harm will be done and it helps you to diagnose misfires.

A. Hi well sounds like u need to replace ur spark plug ,they don't have points OK U can check spark by connecting lead to plug ,unscrewwed of course earth it on mower body and see how strong spark is when cranking it if u get my drift ... That's what normally causes mower starting issues and I'm a girl LOL

I have an older briggs horizontal shaft engine that won't start, seems it has no spark?
Q. I have an older briggs horizontal shaft engine that won't start, seems it has no spark, I have worked on alot of small engines. When I turn it over and hold the wire it gives me a shock, but no spark from the plug, so I took a good plug and tried it again and still no spark. I put a volt meter on the plug wire while turning it over and it only gave me a few volts DC. I think it should give more voltage than that, so is it probably a weak magneto or coil/points, I'm not much on that part.

A. either coil, points or both. they should come together in a repair packet, so replace them and u should be in great shape. good luck

How to fix Briggs & Stratton engine?
Q. Briggs & Stratton magnetron engine will not start - will start with starter fluid - won't keep running though. Replaced gas & spark plug, checked gas line...I think it must be something simple, but what? It's just got a few years service on it.
Asked by Phil P - Wed Sep 12 12:07:44 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. An engine that wont run is not getting one or more of the three things it needs; gas air and a spark. If yours is running with starter fluid, that means air and spark are probably not your problem. If you know the gas is good and the line is clear, that points to a problem with the carburetor. You can clean it yourself if you take your time and don't lose any tiny parts. Carb cleaner spray is available at any auto parts place. good luck

How do I de-winterize a 4-cycle 5 HP Briggs & Stratton Engine?
Q. My friend gave me this engine and it seems to not start and my dad who knows stuff said the engine was left out in the winter. I can pull the cord but it just spins. Yes we have tried the spark plug and I need to de-winterize my engine. the model number is Briggs & Stratton model: 130202. I need serious help because I don't want to re build the engine.

A. If it was left out without fuel stabilizer.. then the carb is varnished/gumed up with gas... take it off, get a rebuild kit and gaskets (carb to engine as well) and tear the carb apart (pics along the way helps a person new to this for reference) and soak it in a BATH type carb cleaner (napa sells it) and blow it out with compressed air and rebuild it and put it on. Btw, drain the old gas and let it dry, might be water in the gastank, gaslines/fuel filter and the carb as well. Almost forgot, replace the airfilter, don't try and clean it, if it has a foam prefilter for the paper air filter, don't oil it!

A. Most likely the points gap is set incorrectly. Without the proper equipment the best way to check it is to turn the engine manually until the points are all the way open, then check the gap. It is usually 18 - 20 thousandths of an inch. If you don't have feeler guages, it's about the thickness of a hacksaw blade. Using the set screws, (one to lock the adjustment, the other to adjust the gap) set the gap to the correct opening. It may also require you to reset the timing. The shadetree trick for this is to remove the spark plug and put a stiff piece of wire in to rest on top of the piston, rotate the engine so that the piston is on the way up on the compression stroke (if it's a four stroke engine) or just on the way up if it's a two… [cont.]

I have a Briggs & Stratton engine mod. 28Q777 which runs rough and backfires. What can I do to stop this?
Q. I just replaced the head gasket and intake valve seal. I had a stuck float valve and fixed that. I also replaced the muffler and muffler gasket. I set the valves at .005" when the piston was at past top dead center on the compression stroke when the piston drops 1/8" down from it's high point. Now the engine runs rough and backfires alot. This seems like a timing problem but I didn't change the valve timing, I didn't open the crankcase, and I don't see any way to change the spark timing. This engine looks as good as new. When I had the head off, the cylinder liner looked so good I could still see the original hone marks from the factory, there were no linear scuff marks on the liner that I could see. The valves weren't burned or pitted. I… [cont.]

A. If this is on a mower, someone hit something while mowing. There is an aluminum square sheer key under the flywheel to the crank shaft. If the engine stops sudenly, the flywheel tends to cut the shear key in half and throws the ignition timing way off. The shear key only costs about a dollar, but replacing it can be a challenge as the flywheel needs to be removed. As well as all the cowling around the engine. ADDED: Holy Cow, 16 HP single cylinder engine? That bugger must realy vibrate. The engine cooling air intake screen should come off fairly easily. Then the fluwheel nut. (big nut) You may need a 1/2" air impact wrench If you're able to get the nut off, look down the crank shaft and flywheel. You should be able to determine if the… [cont.]

A. need more info, is it an engine fitted with an electric start, is the battery charged, have you checked the plug lead and replaced or checked the spark, or is it a drawstring start or mechanical start, if so it would only be either the lead, plug or dynamo, the spark(or electric) circuit on a drawstring motor is pretty basic.

A. Take off the carburetor, then nip down to ORiley's or Autozone and ask them for some carburetor cleaner. This is a one gallon can of carburetor cleaner that the trade use. You place the carburetor into the tray and leave the carburetor, over night, to soak away the dirt and gum that clogs the tiny fuel ways. After 12 hours, take out the carburetor, give the carburetor a good shake, and, if you have an airline handy, blow through the passages, and then spray the inside with some B12. Refit the carburetor and and with the spark plug out, pour just a little engine oil into the cylinder and flip the engine over a few times to lubricate the cylinder bore. Replace the spark plug and fill the fuel tank with fresh fuel. Then, with fuel in the… [cont.]

However, I got no spark. So I installed a new magneto (which is today's substitute for the old fashioned coil and points of course) and a new magneto ground wire. Still no spark ! A. Not really sure if it is the problem or not. Keep in mind continuity from coil legs to block mounting posts is for completion of electrical circuit, required for any electrical circuit to exist. Grounding the internals with the kill wire is something different as it is short circuiting the deal as it is shorting or grounding the supply from the coil to the plug. The coil legs are simply allowing the plug to return juice to the coil to complete the circuit. Showing continuity from the kill terminal to coil legs is the same as to the block and is completing circuit as well, just not the operating circuit. If you have good continuity from coil legs to block and have the kill wire disconnected and get no spark, your coil is dead.… [cont.]

A. Replace the air filter. Sometimes an air filter can even appear to be clean, but is in fact clogged from oil or fuel varnishes. Paper or foam, they must be cleaned or replaced from time to time.

Replaced the Solid State magneto coil in a Briggs and Stratton a week ago and the engine ran fine?
Q. Now today it wont start, just back fires. Put the old one back in and it starts fine. (replaced the old one because of bad spark when hot) Seems very straight forward to replace. Are there any a adjustments ? Any thoughts?
Asked by martywdx - Thu Oct 15 20:10:32 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You should have about .010 inch clearance between the coil and the flywheel. It is possible you did not tighten the coil sufficient after you installed it and the magnet on the flywheel pulled it against the flywheel. This measurement is made at the center of the magnet and the pickup on the coil.

Q. I have a 21" Bolen mower w. a Briggs & Stratton engine. On occasion, the mower stops and cannot be re-started, until I disconnect the spark plug. Then it runs just fine. After a few minutes, I can reconnect the plug and continue to work. The amazing thing, is that I have 2 identical mowers, and each does this same trick from time to time. Certainly makes changing the blade more exciting. Anyone have thoughts on what is going on?

A. Are you sure it's not an electric mower ? only kidding. When you say "disconnect" the plug, are you uncapping it or unscrewing the plug to remove it? Without more info, it's hard to diagnose. it could be a few different issues. Is the gap correct on the plugs? If not, it may be running too hot. Is the gasoline old? Gasoline has a shelf life. Empty the tank and refill with fresh fuel. (that's my guess if it happens to both mowers).
