is their web site for Torque settings for Nissan headbolts?
Q. I have a 1994 Nissan 3.0L V6 which needs a head gasket with new bolts.Has anyone seen a listing on the web for their torque settings? I noticed that some bolts have 3 numbers imprinted on the heads. Can anyone tell me what they mean?
Asked by Robert C - Sat Jan 24 15:13:44 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Number system on the head of the bolts is grade of bolt but not all are numbered (don't worry) the service manual the head bolts are torqued in several stages. Blowout the bolt holes.Use a drop of motor oil to the bolt thread Tighten from the middle and sprial outward first torque all to 22#ft then torque all to 43#ft. Then loosen completely next tighten to 22#ft after that either tighten to 47#ft or turn with an angle wrench to 60 degrees. I just tighten to 50#ft as my last torque and spray both sides of the head gasket with Permetex Copper coat. Copper gasket for added sealing and piece of mind. Good luck your next question how to line up the timing marks do not turn the motor with the timing belt off and I reccomend using a Nissan Belt… [cont.]

Torque on Bolts?
Q. Why does the torque settings differ on a variety of components when there is a standard list published. On that list , it is explained that these torque settings are onle to be used when the manufacturers specs are unavailable. How do manufacturers then go about calculating the ideal torque? The torque wrench is in any case inaccurate due to friction and a list of other factors. There are far more accurate and expensive items to measure, but for a motor repair shop, how does the the engineering shop calculate the cylinder head torque on vehicles and why does it differ? Just so that we are clear, im talking about comparisons between two identical materials?
Asked by Roger L - Thu Jun 7 04:35:16 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Bolts and nuts are subject to differential thermal expansion due variation of material grade. Also bolts are subject to different operating stress conditions and temperature depending on application. Manufacturer's of equipment are in a better position to asses it . Standard charts are thus for guidance only .

Should i change the head gasket on my yamaha pw80?
Q. Ok i accidently went out of control and crashed into a pond the bike was fully sinken took it out cleaned her all up new oils and it would not turn over was impossible so i than undid the head and to find the piston area was full of water so i kick started it a few times to get the piston moveing so it would get the water out i got it all out, i than did put the gasket and head back on did not use a torque wrench as i thought it would not be needed as i did not know the torque settings i tightened bolts right up bike started goes good my main concern is should i not worry about it or buy a new gasket and get correct torque settings???
Asked by probiker - Fri Apr 24 11:34:43 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The worst thing that can happen is the the head gasket will leak. Head gaskets leak on bikes all the time and never cause any damage. How can air ware down cast iron? It's not water cooled, so no problem with over-heating. Not torquing the head bolts - the worst that can happen is they can loosen up and allow the head gasket to leak. Re-using the head gasket on a pw80? - Don't worry about it.
