head gasket?
Q. my mom has a 97 plymouth van. we have experienced overheating, smoke out the tail pipe, and oil on the ground right after we put it in. could this be a blown head gasket? if it is about how much would it cost to get it fixed? could there be an underlying problem? the van was a very nicely running vehicle until this happened. it doesn't have more than 40k miles on it either.

A. if there is water in the oil, and oil in the water, then it's a head gasket. most likely, it got hot and blew the gasket. this can be expensive to fix, as you have to remove the head (and everything else attached to it).

How much is a new head gasket with installation on a 95 Mustang?
Q. I am considering buying a 95 Mustang for my first car and the only thing it needs is a head gasket. The car is already priced way below KBB at $800 so how much would a head gasket installed be? Also is this a good deal even though the car is not inspected? And can a car run a little bit without a head gasket?
Asked by jrryadigg - Sun May 17 10:38:22 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Hi: Short answer. DO not buy this car. If the head gasket is shot the main bearings may also be washed out from having coolant in the engine. You could spend from $500 bucks to $1500 depending on wether you need to have the heads or block machined etc as they may have been warped by the engine overheating when the gasket let go, then have to rebuild the entire motor a month later when the bearings come to a screeching halt. Either get a new/ used motor and replace the entire thing or stay away from the car altogether. And No, a car can not run without a head gasket. After about 10 miles the motor will seize up. russ

What is the cost to replace head gasket in 2002 buick century custom?
Q. What will be total cost for head gasket replacement in 2002 buick centry custom car with 12000 miles on odometer? Some one is selling this car and mentioned head gasket may need to replacement. What are the signs in car when some one can say head gasket needs to be replaced?

A. Be very very very careful!!! It is hard to know who to trust these days. Everyone always says its just a head gasket that needs replaced when it is actually the head itself that will need work. When you start the vehicle does it run rough? Is there blue smoke coming out of the exhaust? If so be careful. For OEM parts I like to use www.partstrain.com I have used them for many repairs.

What causes an engine to blow a head gasket between cylinders?
Q. Today while driving along my car blew a head gasket between the number one and number two cylinders. It doesnt overheat any to my knowledge (although it just has the idiot light and not a gauge). Engine is a 2.3L ford SOHC. The head was rebuilt in late 2006 and so obviously the head gasket was replaced then. The head was decked but the block was not. So what all could have caused this gasket to blow out right there?

A. The head gasket blew in the area with the least amount of clamping force - improper torque, reused head bolts, low area on head or block, defective gasket, hot spot, etc...

How do I change head gasket on 1989 yamaha 125cc dirt bike?
Q. I just got this dirt bike and the boy changed the head gasket and he ran it and he then noticed it was not running right. So this should mean it is a blown head gasket correct? He thinks he did tighten it up to much when he put it on. SO does this mean if i change it it would be fine? Also does it running rough mean the head gasket is blown?
Asked by power_man_5000_88 - Wed Apr 30 15:01:13 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Why did he change the head gasket in the first place? That engine is water cooled - if the head gasket was blown, it would leak coolant out of the cylinder, or the compression of the engine would be blown into the cooling system and blow the coolant out of the radiator cap. The head gasket is the least of your worries. Bad gas or incorrect premix ratio. Dirty air cleaner. Dirty carb. Worn out top end (cylinder, piston & rings).

When replacing a head gasket would a mechanic ever re-use the exhaust gaskets?
Q. I had my head gasket replaced on my 2001 Subaru Forester about 2 months ago, and just had to go back yesterday to find out that my exhaust gaskets were leaking. Wouldn't that be part of any gasket kit? And would a mechanic ever re-use old gaskets when doing such a big job?
Asked by Roselyn - Fri Mar 26 14:19:19 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The exhaust gaskets on your engine are quite high quality and can usually be reused (except in the states where salt is used on the roads in winter) with no leaks. They are not automatically included in any Subaru factory head gasket "kit". The fact that they apparently were not leaking initially when you first got the car back suggests improper tightening of the nuts securing the exhaust system. To replace the gaskets should take about 20 minutes and no more leaks.

How much to fix a blown head gasket on a 1999 Ford Taurus or should I sell it?
Q. Would it be cheaper to sell the car or get it fixed? Is it something I could fix myself? How much would the car be worth with a blown head gasket? It's in good shape and that's the only thing wrong with it.

A. well you can't drive it like that, it will just blow all the water out and get hot and crack either the head or block if they aren't already.. A shop can charge you around $1000, or you can try to do it yourself.. if it's the sohc or dohc, it pretty complicated, but the pushrod ohv, which yours is, is much simpler and is doable, because the cam is in the block and not on top of the head, so you don't have to worry about realigning the cam and chains... just get a shop manual and follow it, remove the heads and take them to a machine shop for rebuilding, then with new gaskets and bolts reinstall them.. you'll have to rent or borrow a torque wrench..most parts stores loan them out..

How much would a mechanic cost for a blown head gasket?
Q. How much would the mechanic cost for a blown head gasket. The car is a porsche 944 the year 1985. The head gasket kit is $200 and I was wondering how much a non-dealership mechanic would charge? If there is anything else I need to need, please tell me. Thx for any advice or suggestions in advance. This is whats wrong with the car I was looking forward to buy. The car is $2500 plus the repairs.

A. it could be very expensive. if it needs a new head gasket you also need to have the head itself checked. that could cost you a ton if theres something wrong. also being porsche there may be some specialty tools required and a "regular" mechanic may not have them. if the head is ok your still looking at a few hundred or more in labor easy and atleast 100 to have the head just checkd out. who knows what it costs to fix or buy a head.

A. This is a very difficult job on this car, especially if its turbo. If you have not changed head gaskets before, you won't want this one to be your first. If the car ran with water in the oil the crankshaft will be damaged too. Consider getting another used engine. If you do take the heads off, you'll get a "top end gasket kit" should have everything you need and then some. Get a service manual or all-data account. Read it. Take the heads to check for flatness and pressure checked at a machine shop.

How does a blown head gasket work?
Q. I am currently looking into getting this small little subaru with a blown head gasket. It is a 1985 GL Sedan. And I would like to know what exactly the head gasket does. Does the car still run with it blown? About how much does it cost to fix it? Even after its fixed, will it effect other parts of the car? Please help.

A. The head gasket is placed between the block and the head. This is used to allow the head to be separated from the block for repair. There are many channels and ports that run from the block to the head. Oil, coolant, and combustion. Keeps these 3 elements where they belong. The car can continue to run with it blown. This is not cheap to repair. Need to have the head surfaced and if it is to thin to shave, warped, or cracked it will have to be replaced. While it is off the car need to have valves redone. Total cost in a shop probably 800 to 2000 depending on the shop, condition and repair needed. Yes it could effect the car and still have problems after repair. It is very important to know how long it has been this way and if it still runs.… [cont.]

A. Depends on what caused the gasket to go in the first place if you have had the car from new and managed 71K, there is no problem with its continued good health from here on in - unless it overheated and warped the head whereby it will have been skimmed and a thicker gasket fitted to compensate for the lost material this will be more vulnerable to failure than the original head/Gasket combination

A. starting price per head around $1200 if you have the water pump, timing belt and other things replace while you have it apart the total for both sides can come to around $4500. That's what our 98 cost to do I had 4 quotes and 4500 was middle range but the shop had the best reputation still going strong 45k miles later.

Can a head gasket be blown but have no visual damage?
Q. Ok i was having random and multiple misfiring codes thrown.I took the heads off but the gasket doesn't really show no visible damage. Is it possible to have a leak and not really be able to tell visually? This is on a Dodge 4.7 Before I took it apart it ran really hot one time then started running really rough. The spark plugs on one head were all wet. After I took it apart though I see no visual damage to the gasket.
