What voltage should you get between the diode and the battery on an 11 hp briggs with a 3 amp charging system?
Q. When I check the voltage on the 11 hp briggs I get 12.5 volts DC. Is this the normal reading or is it low? The system is a 3 amp with an AC headlight system.

My 10.5 hp briggs and stratton engine is leaking gas. It appears to be from a small silver cylinder piece?
Q. It is a sutech 33 inch stealth walk behind mower with 10.5 hp b/s engine. I noticed it is leaking fuel slowly from a small silver cylinder looking piece on the lower left side (if you are behind the mower). The piece has a nut on the bottom but I don't know if it can be tightened.
Asked by D K - Wed Jun 18 10:52:33 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The piece your referring to is the cover for the fuel float. Sometimes but rare the nut on the bottom will loosen from the vibration of the motor. Maybe someone has recently worked on it and it didn't get tight enough? It may be coming from there or it could be coming from a fuel line and the cover is where it appears to be leaking from. Should be a simple fix. Check the fuel lines for any cracks splits, replace if need be. Make sure they connected properly; meaning a good tight fit. Check around the carburetor to make sure it's not coming from there. Lastly; loosen & remove the bolt on the bottom of the cover, gently tap it to remove. Make sure the rubber O ring is in good condition. clean it, the mating surfaces then re install.… [cont.]

have a 14 hp briggs & stratton riding mower that wont start the head lights come on but the motor wont start?
Q. i try useing a battry charger on the starter to get it to start and nothing happond is there away to see if the starter is the problem?
Asked by james c - Sun Jun 29 14:20:59 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This is the red neck way. Be sure the mower is out of gear I guess it is a rider. Find the solenoid follow the red wire off the battery when you find it take a screw driver and jump across it if the starter tries to engage it is OK. Then check your gear shift, clutch or break peddle, seat, and blade engagement for a little switch one of them is ether bad or has gotten out of place a little and is not closing the circuit to allow your mower to start. I would almost bet this is the problem. They are just little plastic switches with a push button that has to be pushed in for the mower to start. Start with the one on the seat it will be easiest to see and you will know what you are looking for.

What can be the cause of backfiring in 19 hp Briggs and Stratton Lawn mower?
Q. I drained the gas tank, cleaned the float bowl out, and put fresh gas in it. It seemed to help a little bit, but still pops every once in a while. And I put some Gas Line antifreeze (to take water out of gas) and it seemed to help a little more, but I still get the popping from the exhaust.
Asked by jakeboy83 - Sun Aug 26 16:31:11 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It can be caused by too much fuel. You may want to remove the carburetor and clean it properly. Put it back together with a rebuild kit. Another thing could be that the exhaust valve is not closing completly all the time. This can be due to a burned valve, valve out of adjustment(too tight) or carbon build up on the stem. The carbon build up could be caused by the carb needing cleaning and making the engine run too rich.

Snapper riding mower w/ 11 hp Briggs engine replacement question?
Q. My Snapper rear engine riding mower 11 hp engine blew. I found a used 11 hp with the same model number, but the type is different. Will my pulleys and clutch work with this replacement with little work? The used engine looks similar to mine, starter and everything. I just don't want to waste my money. Thanks for any help!!

A. Pretty much any engine will fit in any tractor - some will fit perfect, some need modifications. Usally the modifications are to the electrical system, wiring the motor up. The crankshafts should be the same size ( 1" - 11/4" diameter with a keyway - i suggest lightly neverseizing the shaft, to facilititate easy removal , if needed again) . Most tractor chassis are predrilled for different motor applications. When replacing motors, go with same displacement or slightly larger, but use original pulleys for original motor. Kidd

How do I get the piston at top dead center of a 12 hp briggs?
Q. I have rebuilt this motor and now it will not start. I have fuel spark and compression. I just don't know how far the piston has to go in the cylinder wall to know when its at top dead center. I know how to time the motor by lining up the marks on the crank and the cam gear. Thanks in advance.
Asked by sunkissed_babe1606 - Tue Sep 15 15:59:22 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You may have to remove the head because of an angled sparkplug hole to get an accurate view. If you have compression, your timing marks must be correct, (it's either right, or complete opposite wrong) If the sparkplug hole is oriented the same as the piston travel, you can remove plug and use some type of gauging device.(anything that you can rest on top of the piston and check movement)

Asked by bobrch19 - Sun May 17 17:35:22 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Check to see if it has spark. If it does put a teaspoon of gas into the sparkplug hole and try to start it. If it starts and runs for a couple of seconds and dies the most likely issue is the carburetor. Make sure the fuel tank is clean and that you have fuel flow to the carburetor.

What type of oil does my reel mower need. Its older model,3 hp,briggs&stratton,4 cycle,?
Q. Its an older lawnmaster mower with a continous bar where u push with the drive clutch on the right and the reel clutch on the left. there is a oil dip stick on the front. This oil stick is on an angle. I have read that i fill the oil up until its is coming out, is this right?

A. Do not use a 10 w based oil..older lawnmowers need a straight 30 oil..not hd..hd is high detergent oil and nd is a non detergent oil..You do not use the 10 w or 5 w oils..as mentioned if this cap does not have a dipstick on it then you fill it right too the top..this is common with filler caps at an angle..Here is what i am concerned about.. A reel mower is a mower that is strictly push..and has no motor on it...I do not know if you were misinformed about what it is..but that is what a "ree" mower is..here is some info on that and the link t came from.. A. e85 fuel will give it a boost, make sure to open the carb needle valve to adjust for the proper air/fuel mixture. While not exactly a cheap modification, a belt drive torque converter would give it more acceleration and top speed.

A. Loosen the magneto rotate the fly wheel magnet to the magneto use a business card to set the gap between the magneto and magnet. old trick. If no spark check wireing and ground wires. The problem may also be caused by safety system on the handle there is a seperate handle that must be held or the mower will not start this grounds the magneto preventing spark. At times the cables or the grounding tab may be out of adjustment.

How to start a 14 HP OHV Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine?
Q. Engine will turn over once and then stop. By bumping starter it will turn over again once and stop. Acts like too much compression. Have had this problem in the past and taken to the shop and had repaired several times. Am tired of the expense of repairs. Mower is old (2001)but runs good. Have asked the repair shop what causes this and was told carburation and valve timing. If so how do I adjust valve timing?
Asked by Jus{hug}Me - Sun Jun 15 20:25:31 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. the overhead valve engine requires a valve adjustment occassionally, this is done by removing the valve cover, turning the engine to top dead center on the compression stroke and going past top dead center 1/4". then with a feeler guage you set the valve clearance to .004, you can purchase a repair manual from your nearest Briggs & Stratton dealer that instructs you step by step on how to do this, the manual is less than $20.00 and is a great investment for a doitselfer.
