how to rebuild hydrostatic transmission on a lawn mower?
Q. I am looking for parts and information on rebuilding a hydrostatic transmission on a Murray 46-inch lawn mower. Problem is that when the unit warms up, it slows down, and barely goes in reverse. New belt didn't help. I never changed the fluid.

Q. I work at Lowes Hardware and i sell lawnmowers. i have many peopla ask how one works and i am not really sure. I know that it uses fluids but other than that, im not really sure.

A. It depends on what it says. An "Automatic" is an adjustment of the tension on the drive belt. In a hydro, you are controlling the flow of oil with a valve.

Q. What is a hydrostatic transmission and how does it work?

A. A hydrostatic transmission consists of a variable-displacement pump and a fixed or variable displacement motor, operating together in a closed circuit. In a closed circuit, fluid from the motor outlet flows directly to the pump inlet, without returning to the tank. As well as being variable, the output of the transmission pump can be reversed, so that both the direction and speed of motor rotation are controlled from within the pump. This eliminates the need for directional and flow (speed) control valves in the circuit. Because the pump and motor leak internally, which allows fluid to escape from the loop and drain back to the tank, a fixed-displacement pump called a charge pump is used to ensure that the loop remains full of fluid… [cont.]

A. Check with the manufacturer or a repair shop for them...should be just regular hydraulic oil. If you plan on working it real hard, consider an auxillary cooler.

I drove a Ingersoll Rand BL-275 and the transmission seemed to make a whining sound when moving forward?
Q. It did not make this noise in reverse. This was a backhoe that I went to look at on Craigslist, and I do not own it. I was just wondering what might be causing the noise? I know that the transmission is hydrostatic. Thank you for looking.

A. Hydrostats are a little noisier than others, but since you noticed a difference between forward and reverse, says something's not right. It could be a pump either cavitating from wrong hydraulic oil or filter plug up, or just wear. There should be a test port, on the control valve for hydraulic pressure, which you could monitor with a test gauge, looking for needle bounce when it's under load and hot, with a noticeable jump. Unless the price is really great, think a bit before you purchase it, because these babies are a little pricey to overhaul. My question would be, why is it up for sale?

I have this honda lawn mower self propelled?
Q. The self propelled throttle cable shows a turtle and a rabbit And how can i know putting it in turtle will turn the wheels slow and in rabbit will turn the wheels fast? (hydrostatic transmission) hopes this helps
Asked by David Huynh - Sat Oct 27 16:22:59 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Let me ask this, does the speed of the engine change when you move the throttle lever? If so then that does not control the self propel, it controls the engine speed. There should be another lever to control the self propel, and is is near the "bail bar", or the bar you have to hold to keep the engine running. If you have the hydro transmission, then the orange lever next to the engine speed is what controls the speed of the self propel. Please refer to your owners manual. If you can't find it go to and follow the instructions.

Where to find SE, CC, or CD classification engine oil?
Q. My John Deere mower has the hydrostatic transmission, and is low on fluid. The manual says "SAE 10W30 engine oil with API classifications of SE, CC, or CD is recommended in the transmission." That's all great, but I can't find such oil at any of the local auto parts stores, and the guys working at the stores know nothing about it. Home Depot sells Deere, but the local HD doesn't have such oil either. (Nor does Lowe's.) Thank you for your help. -Dan 11 April update: I called my local Deere dealer yesterday. They service guys there said that the 10W30 I use in my engine would be just fine, as the SM classification is much better than the SE anyway. So as it turn out, the oil that comes in their standard service kit will work. Thank… [cont.]

A. those classifications of oils were made to meet the requirements of the vehicles manufactured at the time. any 10w30 oil that you purchase will be far better than the oils you were looking for.new oil classifications come out every year or so and the old oils are obsolete. so dont worry any 10w30 will do.

Asked by Webz - Thu Apr 16 17:03:49 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Are there any signs of leaks beneath the mower? If so you may just need some fluid in transmission. If not you will probably need to rebuild transmission. This is not a big a problem to do if you can get the parts breakdown and the parts for the repair.. Normally you will have to replace the clutch surfaces and the springs. Be sure to clean all debris from transmission after repair. And install new recommended fluid. If you do not repair expect to pay around $1200 for new transmission.

garden tractor troubles?
Q. I have a Ariens High Sierra garden tractor. the engine struggles to push it up hills. i have never had this problem before. could it be the hydrostatic transmission or the belts? the engine runs great it is still strong as a tank
Asked by Paul - Tue Jan 20 23:14:57 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you have never changed belts would try that first. You can probably tell by looking at the drive belt to see that it is not frayed cracked etc. also make sure it has enough tension. You can also try a bit of belt dressing to see it that helps, if so get you a new belt ASAP.

I have a 16hp 42" riding mower. I want to replace the engine with a compressed air one -- What do I need?
Q. After seeing the cool stuff with Tata motors in India and the whole air-car thing, I'm thinking that since I can't get enough juice to run my 16hp riding mower via electricity, why not try compressed air? I would use carbon fiber 4500psi tanks and need to know how to size an air motor as well as how to determine the run time off a diver's air tank. I think a standard dive tank holds 15L of air. No idea how to do any of these calculations:) so i need to know a couple things: a. how big of an air motor do i need (and what type) b. how to size the air tank to cut 14,000sq ft of level lawn c. how to control the output of such a fun system;) The drive shaft of the engine would connect to a hydrostatic transmission, so i think I just need a… [cont.]

A. compressed air motors are not very practical at all. Even with very heavy air tanks, you can only run for a few minutes.
