Is there an alternative for using hydrostatic transmission fluid?
Q. This guy i know has a lawnmower with a hydrostatic transmission and was wandering if you can put anything else other than hydrostatic transmission fluid in it because the fluid is very expensive, any cheaper alternatives? He's put automatic gearbox oil in it, will it still work.

A. It depends on what it says. An "Automatic" is an adjustment of the tension on the drive belt. In a hydro, you are controlling the flow of oil with a valve.

A. The Craftsman Hydrostatic trans-axle is a completely non-serviceable unit. If it gives any problems replacement is the only option. Sorry! You can go to www3.sears.com input your model number to bring up your mower, find and price the trans-axle to see if repair is worth it to you. This price will be for parts only, this site can not include installation labor.

Q. Its a Yard Machine by mtd and about 8 years old. It kind of makes a squealing noise when i try to go foward and back ( its a hydrostatic transmission) But it goes pretty fast still but I think it would be better if i could change the fluid, I didnt see a plug but there is a rubber hose that comes off the top of the transmission thats about a foot long with a cap on the end of it.

A. Without knowing the manufacturer and model it is difficult to answer your question. Do you still have your owners manual? This will often give service information that might give guidance. No owners manual. Try searching Yahoo with the manufacturer's name. Many have sites that include a manual you can download. Hope this helps a little.

Q. I replaced the drive belt but no success. Any suggestions.
Asked by Ted K - Thu Mar 12 13:52:36 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Don't forget about the lever on the back that you pull out and push in to put tractor in the mode to manually push it or use the hydor transmission. It may be stuck in the manual mode. I also noticed one time I was running my tractor around in circles as I was using a roller tine attachment to rough up lawn to plant grass seed. After about 1/2 hr of this, my tractor would not move either. Apparently I had forced transmission fluid out of the breather tube when I was driving around in those tight circles. I put some fluid back in and it was fine.

A. Hi Michael, You didn't state what model you have, so I'm forced to guess! I THINK you have Model # RZT 50 Zero Turn Rider. Check out this link. Here is where you can get your manual on-line. You'll need to know your Model # as well as the Serial # to get the correct manual. This link will allow you to click on a "locator" page if you're not sure where to find your numbers. Oh, and NEVER fill a hydraulic system through the vent!!! Fair Winds nad Smooth Sailing, -Jim-

I drove a Ingersoll Rand BL-275 and the transmission seemed to make a whining sound when moving forward?
Q. It did not make this noise in reverse. This was a backhoe that I went to look at on Craigslist, and I do not own it. I was just wondering what might be causing the noise? I know that the transmission is hydrostatic. Thank you for looking.
Asked by rufus - Sat Jul 4 08:19:47 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hydrostats are a little noisier than others, but since you noticed a difference between forward and reverse, says something's not right. It could be a pump either cavitating from wrong hydraulic oil or filter plug up, or just wear. There should be a test port, on the control valve for hydraulic pressure, which you could monitor with a test gauge, looking for needle bounce when it's under load and hot, with a noticeable jump. Unless the price is really great, think a bit before you purchase it, because these babies are a little pricey to overhaul. My question would be, why is it up for sale?

Asked by mgleboff - Tue May 13 20:35:09 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I would first take a look at the linkage to see if it has become disconnected before I started tinkering with the transmission. It may save you a lot of time and money. Just follow the linkage from the shift lever to the tranny and see if all is connected and moves when you shift the lever. If so, then you may have transmission problems. Good luck.

Hydrostatic Lawn Tractor question?
Q. I am looking at buying a mini Montgomery Wards tractor off craigslist. I plan on adding hyd. and a mini loader but i need it to go at least 10 to 12 mph i have been looking for the same thing with the 3 speed but i cant find any near Ramsey, MN. I was going to remove the engine drive pulley and just attach a larger pulley to get alittle more speed but i was wondering could i do the same to a hydrostatic transmission or would that just hurt it? If anybody knows how i could make it faster or where i could pick up a 3 speed 8hp Montgomery Wards tractor that would be great.
Asked by Jordan - Tue Jul 20 18:34:58 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The gearing in the hydrostatic transmission will not allow you to go any faster, no matter what engine or pulley you fit. I doubt you will get a transmission to fit without major work. XX

MTD lawn tractor with auto transmission quality?
Q. I am looking to by an MTD riding mower with an auto tranny(not hydrostatic). The owner says it works by increasing the tension on the drive belt to make the unit speed up. I know MTD has a spotty reputation, but I am mostly concerned about the auto drive system. Does anyone have any info on these mowers? Do they hold up well? Any problems?
Asked by Rob B - Sat Apr 12 20:14:23 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The AutoDrive system is not the best system for propelling a lawn tractor across the yard, but they do work. Provided you don't attempt to pull anything over 100 pounds (US) with it, and change both drive belts yearly. The tractor should outlive the deck by several years.

A. Clean off the transmission and find the tag or the imprint on the transmission that identifies the transmission and manufacturer. Do a Google search for the manufacturer and use the ID numbers to locate your transmission.

Where to find SE, CC, or CD classification engine oil?
Q. My John Deere mower has the hydrostatic transmission, and is low on fluid. The manual says "SAE 10W30 engine oil with API classifications of SE, CC, or CD is recommended in the transmission." That's all great, but I can't find such oil at any of the local auto parts stores, and the guys working at the stores know nothing about it. Home Depot sells Deere, but the local HD doesn't have such oil either. (Nor does Lowe's.) Thank you for your help. -Dan 11 April update: I called my local Deere dealer yesterday. They service guys there said that the 10W30 I use in my engine would be just fine, as the SM classification is much better than the SE anyway. So as it turn out, the oil that comes in their standard service kit will work. Thank… [cont.]
Asked by vthoky - Sun Apr 9 15:59:28 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. those classifications of oils were made to meet the requirements of the vehicles manufactured at the time. any 10w30 oil that you purchase will be far better than the oils you were looking for.new oil classifications come out every year or so and the old oils are obsolete. so dont worry any 10w30 will do.
