What things should I check on a riding cub cadet lawn mower that has white smoke coming from it?
Q. Cub Cadet riding lawn mower is 2-3 years old. It has white billowing smoke when the blade drops down to cut. What things should I be checking. Is this something I can fix at home perhaps? the small engine shop says they are behind 2-3 weeks.

A. Where is the smoke coming from? Is it coming out the exhaust or from the the mower deck? If it is coming from the exhaust you may have put too much oil in the crankcase. If it is from the deck it must be the belts. Something is not turning or the belts are not on correctly. I know this isn't much help but more information is needed for this one.

My lawn mower has black smoke coming from the muffler...?
Q. My dad used to fix mowers so I have just about what i need to fix it but, can't figure out this problem. I changed the oil, Cleaned the muffler, and air filter. It's a murray 2in1, 4.0 hp, any suggestions would be great. thanx It ran out of gas, so i let it cool down a bit like usual and filled it that's when it started with the smoke. Nope I always double check my gas cans, plus it's labeled lawnmower.

A. It may be running too cold. Get a hotter plug. ORRR It is getting too much fuel. Take the carb apart and make sure the float and needle is working proper. Then turn the mixture screw in until it JUST seats(stops) and turn out 1 1/2 rotations(could be 2 complete rotations). Try to start it. After it starts turn the screw in slowly until the motor starts coughing and then back out a 1/4 turn. Should be good there.

A. is your oil level too high? did u inadvertently put mixed 2 cycle gas in it? if you have had it tipped up you could have leaked oil into the combustion chamber but it should dissapate after a few minutes of running. or if its an older machine you could just have worn rings and cylinder walls. On the other hand if your running a lawnboy lawnmower it is a 2 cycle engine and will smoke normally, but if its excessive then your mix is incorrect.

Q. I already changed the oil, put a new air filter in and it still smokes. A little bit of oil is being spit out of the exhaust where the white smoke is coming from? help?

A. white smoke can mean too much gas, blue smoke usualy means oil, none the less, dont tip your oil out, your mower is made to purge extra oil out of its breather, and into the carb. how long does the smoke last? is it constant? does it happen every time you start your mower?

A. Before you rebuild or replace your mower, You can try one thing; Buy a quart of "Marvel Mystery" oil. You can find it where ever motor oil is sold. Remove the spark plug and pour Marvel Mystery oil in the spark plug hole. The oil will sit on top of the piston in the cylinder and, over time, seep down the cylinder wall past the piston. After about 12 hours, try to turn the engine by slightly turning the mower blade by hand. If the blade moves a little, then you're on the right track. Add more mm oil to the spark plug hole if needed and wait a little while longer. Then try to move the mower blade by hand again. It might take acouple of tries, or several days. One of two things will happen; Either you will eventually free up the motor, or you… [cont.]

About how often does a muffler need to be changed on a self-propelled lawn mower?
Q. White smoke is coming from the muffler and it gets extremely HOT within a matter of seconds.
Asked by bluecrane - Mon Jul 28 15:25:11 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The smoke is from oil burning. Check the oil level in the crankcase, if it is above the full mark on the dipstick drain some out. Also check the airfilter, it may have oil on it if you have overfilled the crankcase. If it has oil on the paper filter you will have to replace it. Mufflers get damn hot and quick. They are just short of glowing hot. That is normal. Installing a new muffler may make it quieter for a bit but if it is in good shape it is ok.

Smoke is coming out of my lawnmower?!?
Q. I had been mowing for a while and it's really hot. Just added more gas and smoke (think it was white?) started coming out of the front of my older Sears push mower-plus a burning smell. I put lawnmower oil in about 2 months ago, but not since. It did not smoke long. Pretty sure there was nothing wrong with my gas, except it was hot from sitting outside while I mowed. Should I go buy more lawnmower oil and add it while it's so hot or wait or what? This mower is old and I don't want to pay to take it in, was hoping it would last another month until grass dies for the winter... Please give me simple instructions, I don't have the manufacturer's handbook and don't know where carborator is or what it looks like, for ex.

A. First of all you should check the oil level in your lawn mower every time you use it. I would recommend checking the oil and topping it off with the proper type of oil... Do you still have the manual or know the engine type? If you lawn mower only smokes for a short time when you start it up it may be cause by blow-by... which is oil leaking around the cylinder rings until it warms up. If that's the case don't worry about it and let it warm up a bit before you use it and ignore the smoke. Big key is to check your oil levels! :) Ps: It might not hurt to bring in your mower for a tune up, especially in the winter. Generally they're around $50 maybe $80 w/parts. Or you can put that money towards a replacement mower... your call.

I need help with my Yardman push mower!?
Q. I have a Yardman 6.5 HP push mower. It acts like it wants to start when I pull cord but it doesn't. A couple puffs of white smoke come out when trying to crank but that's it. I have drained gas and replaced with new, changed spark plug, tried to put some gas on the spark plug, put a little gas in carb, primed it...etc. I am at a loss...Any suggestions from this point would be very helpful. Oh, the blade is really dull I don't know if that would have any affect on it or not. Thanks for all the help! :) (It does have oil in it but it didn't at first)

troy bilt lawn mower won't start?
Q. it has new sparkplugs and all the obvious things. it was an automatic choke, but it broke and was too expensive to buy parts for, so they put in a manual choke. i put it on choke to turn on, then pull it away from choke as i am supposed to after it starts. after 3 or 4 days it stops working. i hear a put-put sound coming out of it when i try to start and a little greyish smoke. carb. was just cleaned.

A. Dabs sweety clean the plug and get some fresh gas in the mower. Pull out the choke and when it hits push in the chock half way, when it boggs push the choke all the way in.when the motor gets up to snuff warmth wize then the air/gas mix will not need to be as rich, by pushing in the choke you open up the throat of the carb and allow for more air to mix with the gas vapor.

Does my riding mower have blown head gasket, worn piston ring, or something else?
Q. Hi, I have a problem with my John Deere Sabre riding mower with 15hp, OHV B&S engine. The rider runs fine but smokes. Oil drips down from the OHV housing to the exhaust that causes the smoke. The air filter housing is wet with oil. Spark plug shows sign of oil foul (I saw oil coming out when I removed the spark plug.) I don t know if I overfilled the oil or not. Serious question about my son, serious answers only please?
Q. Disclaimer: This might be long, I will try my best to keep it short and sweet. My youngest son is 9 years old and he has always had anxiety even since he was a toddler. When he was little he was afraid of loud noises (low airplanes, lawn mowers, vacuums, etc...) I always thought as he got older it would get better but it just seems to get worse. He is terrified of Thunder (which we get a lot of during the summer). Every little thing that happens can set off his anxiety these days for example...last night our smoke detector went off for no reason (prob need battery change) and all night he was scared we were going to have a fire or that there was a fire. No matter what I said he was crying and upset. I finally had to lie and tell him… [cont.]

If your leaning towards counseling I think you should go for it. It may just be able to teach him new coping technique's. You never know which ones will be effective but you can't use them unless you know them.

If your leaning towards counseling I think you should go for it. It may just be able to teach him new coping technique's. You never know which ones will be effective but you can't use them unless you know them.

Why is life so unfair(please read)?
Q. My life have been unfair for the past years. I never get anything from my parents. They are always paying for my sisters expenses. They pay $200.00 dollars for her medical visits, shoes, clothes, and other things. When I ask for something they always give me the run around. Another thing is that people have cars without a drivers license and still drive around. I don't even have a car to drive. I let my brother have the car that I was about to get. People who smoke weed and do drugs, pregnant, and etc have more than I do. I mean I'm not the best child in the world, but at least give me something. I mower the grass, wash dishes, fold clothes, vacuum, clean tables, and take care of my brother children while he is away during the which is… [cont.]

A. 1 don't worry about what other ppl think...their not helping u get anything and if u did have a car then they would be talking about what type of car it is..Its not ur job to please friends and ppl u know..Your family is treating u like this cause u sound like the youngest..If you compare yourself to ppl that are getting high and driving without a license that's just not smart..but ur young so u don't understand that ppl that have no respect for law eventually have big problems as a adult..you cant see that cause ur young. So of course life seems unfair in your eyes but believe me you haven't seen the have of it yet..But those ppl who u say are doing what ever they want, slowly but sure watch as they get in trouble and then ull realize… [cont.]

A long soap opera story, what is your opinion?
Q. My grandmother and I have never gotten along. She used to physically and mentally abuse me when I was small. She got married to a really good man who turned her around, and she even got really religious. They were made for each other. I believe they were married for a little over 10 years. He died last Thanksgiving morning. She didn't seem very upset, and that same night she started talking about getting remarried! I loved him like he was my real grandfather. He was full of great advice and could never hurt a fly. He smoked most of his life and died from that phlegm stuff. She was actually questioned about his death, but nothing ever came of it. The way this woman put together her words and the scenes just didn't make sense, yet most… [cont.]

A. And I thought my grandmother was bad!! I'm so sorry that you have to deal with this!! Does your grandmother have any living children or close relatives that you could talk to and see if they are willing to speak to your grandmother about her behavior?? Family or not you do not need to put up with this and let her walk all over you. Worst comes to worst you could anonymously call the cops if she's being too disruptive. If she does not own your property than she has no right to vandalize it!! I'll be praying for you that everything will work out! Hang in there!
