How can I make my Briggs and Stratton 5hp mini bike go faster?
Q. The governor has already been replaced with a solid piece of wire, and it goes about 25mph I would say. I have heard mixed reviews about torque converters and that's not going to make me buy one since they are so expensive. If you know of any other modifications I could do to it, that would be great.

A. you might change one of the sprockets to gear it up. you should get about 5000 rpm out of a stock briggs if there is no major restriction. make sure the air filter is good and the exhaust relatively unrestricted. the plug should come out brownish to tan not white or black when the mixture is right. make sure the chain is not too tight and is not kinked. inflate the tires well. thats about it other than blueprinting the engine it self. if you want to take it all apart you can get more speed out of it. you can do 7000 + rpm on a stock bottom end with mods to the intake/ex.

A. Set that at around .015 to .018 . That is not that important a thing. It will start and run well within a large range of spark plug gappings. Your magneto is the most important thing here to produce the high voltage. A defective coil on an older machine will cause great problems. You should be able to produce a rapid snapping spark just by turning this machine over gently with the spark plug removed if the magneto is in good condition. No rapid yanking on the cord for a test for good spark. Otherwise, you will have a lot of starting problems with this machine.

Q. I cleaned the carb, got new gaskets, tried new new gas in the tank, and checked the tube coming from the gas tank to the carb for obstructions. The motor will start if you put gas into the carb, but only as long as the gas in the carb last. Any helpful advice?

A. 20oz of HD 30 motor oil. At the store they sell B&S motor oil in the correct size bottle. Wal-Mart has it in the lawn and garden section as well as the hardware store. But if you want to buy a quart of Heavy Duty 30 weight motor oil then add half a quart and then check it, add more if needed.

How many amps does Craftsman riding lawn tractor 12.5hp Briggs and Stratton I/C Gold engine alternator out?
Q. I have found 3 amps 5 amps 9 amp 10 amps all the way to 16 amps...What is the right amperage?
Asked by Wayne - Fri Nov 20 11:33:33 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you are replacing the alternator with something other than the manufacturer's part, the answer to your question is primarily a matter of the charge rate that is acceptable to the battery you have. In general terms, for a small battery of the kind you would most likely have, a charging rate of 2 amps would be ample.

Asked by Johnny Apollo - Fri Jun 27 11:26:40 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The best way to tell if a engine is a two cycle is to see if it has an oil drain/fill. Two cycle engines mix the oil and fuel in the fuel tank so if its a two cycle it wont have a place to put the oil. Generally the only two-stroke motors you are going to see any more are on trimmers and the like (EPA restrictions) so more than likely a 5.5hp engine is a four stroke(cycle) and will need a standard engine oil, preferable a multi-viscosity like 10W30

A. .025 for the spark plug. Do the following when ever gaping the ignition coil to the magnet in the flywheel. Find or buy an inexpensive set of flat feeler gages long enough to bridge both legs of the ignition coil. Loosen the coil and pull it as far as possible from the flywheel. Using one individual blade .010 -.011 thick place either thickness under both feet of the coil. Roll the flywheel till the magnets face the legs of the coil. The magnetic pull will snap the coil down on the feeler gage and flywheel. Secure the coil with a screwdriver with the feeler gage in place Tighten the screws on the coil. Rotate the flywheel and the feeler gage will spin out. The idea is to get a gap of .010 or .011 thousandths between the flywheel and… [cont.]

A. First off, the parts are out there. Check local landscape supply and mower dealers, I am sure you will find the parts. I recently found carb rebuild kit for (I think) late 70's toro riding mower, at a mom and pop mower dealer and supply store, and those stores always have tons of old parts in stock( sometimes thats all they have lol). Dont be a cheapskate and risk blowing yourself up, find the parts. Usually, when an exact replacement isnt available, there is a part close enough that can be substituted. A good store wont mind opening up a few and finding a close match. Good Luck

Briggs and Stratton 5HP?
Q. Working on a 1971 B&S engine and having a hard time figuring out how the carb springs hook-up and just how exactly the governor functions in conjunction with the carb springs. The governor assy. is bolted to the magneto and seems to be powered by the air created by the fins in the flywheel. Could someone please help. Pictures would be great, but if not, a good ol' "This is how you do it speech" would work too. Thanks in advance.

A. Your Briggs engine uses an air powered vane under the cowl, which uses air pressure derived from the cooling fan on the flywheel. This in turn pulls against a light tension spring connected to the carburetor linkage to give a differential pressure to the throttle spring. these springs are connected to the throttle butterfly bellcrank.

1987 Briggs and stratton 12.5hp Engine revs up and down by its self.?
Q. I got this white lt120 lawnmower with a 2 cylinder opposed twin 12.5hp briggs and stratton engine. The first time i started it i had to have the choke all the way open for it to stay running, even after it was warmed up. so i cleaned the carburetor, the jet was clogged and i removed the gunk from the jet and i cleaned the rest of the carburetor. so i started it up an now it will keep reving up and down by its self and if i pull the choke out half way it will stop this. so i dont know what the problem is. thank you.

A. Its called Hunting and Surging. It has one of 2 causes. 1.) Air filter is clogged 2.) fuel supply restriction. The engine trys to go higher in speed and air or fuel is restricted, to the machine slows down. The resulting slowing increases the supply of air or fuel, causing the machine to speed up. And then it keeps going in a vicious circle, till something changes (throttle, load). Best solution is to clean the carb again, and change the fuel filter if it has one.

A. It will be around 3/4 of a quart. But just check it with the dipstick. Or if it doesn't have a dipstick fill it to the bottom of the fill hole.

Briggs and Stratton 5hp engine hard to turn?
Q. This is an engine on a chipper/shredder that was left out for several years by a neighbor (really, he borrowed it from my parents). When I got it back and started it it ran fine for 2 or 3 minutes but then began to slow down until the engine stopped. The impeller was hard to turn and the pull cord would not turn the engine. I am assuming that the bearings in the engine are bad. I have the shredder apart and can get to one of the bearings. How hard will it be to replace the bearings on this engine? I've done some auto engine work (head gaskets, water pumps, etc), but never have done any small engine work. Any hints on how to approach the problem? After the answers: First, the shaft DOES have bearings. Please don't answer questions… [cont.]

Q. Ok been having mower problems. Mower was spraying oil out the carburetor air filter. I pulled the OHV valve cover off then the head and noticed that the head gasket was torn. This required me taking the lifters (?long steel pipes that run through oil galley and raise rocker arms) and replace. I simply set this tubes back in (motor might have been turned over some during install) placed them into the recession on their rocker arm and pressed them back in place. During the tear down I took off the carb and all the plastic ensemble ontop of the fly wheel. I tested the ignition coil and it had a decent spark. I also tore down and cleaned the carb thoroughly. Now when I crank the motor it turns over and over and over but never fires and… [cont.]

Briggs and Stratton Lawn mower engine help?
Q. When I pull the rope that turns the fly wheel, it sticks when trying to retract the rope. I have to retract and detract to get it free. Do i have to lubricate something on the fly wheel? The engine is a 3.5hp Briggs and Stratton Classic II engine.
Asked by Sabastien G - Tue May 6 03:10:04 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Lubrication will help but it sounds like the spring under the fly wheel has sliped out of place. Not to hard to fix if the cover has screws. If not you will have to take it to a repair shop. If it is a one piece cover over the entire motor it can be tricky to put back together.
