Will you please help with a problem with my Briggs and Stratton 5hp engine?
Q. Hello!! I have a 5hp Briggs and Stratton 5hp horizontal engine on my go kart. It starts fine but moments after I start using the go kart the recoil cord gets caught inside the engine and makes a very loud noice till I stop the engine and pull the cord slack out of the engine. How do I stop this? Should I replace the recoil or the cord?
Asked by extremegforce - Fri Mar 21 13:43:59 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Cord may be too long and gets caught up. Pull it out to start but dont release it. Slowly return the cord unitl it begins to get caught up. Cut the cord and retie to the handle.

How can I boost the performance of my Briggs and Stratton 5hp 4-cycle outboard motor?
Q. Already have a "performance" spark plug. Wondering how to safely up the hp. The warranty is up, so I don't care about voiding anything.

A. Get rid of that "performance spark plug" All that will do is give you a little boost before it burns a hole thru the top if the piston. You didn't say how old it was, but get some preimun gas and some quality raceing oil for air cooled engines. Some of these had a fully adjustable carb. So get you idle adjusted so it starts hot every time then go out on smooth water. Adjust the main jet at 3/4 throttle till it peaks, then open it some more till you can just detect a drop in performance. Take the skeg off the lower unit and replace the white grease with something slipperier-black molly or slick 50 grease. Get good at it you will be doing this often. That's as good as they get. The best way to do better is get a bigger engine with a better… [cont.]

Briggs and Stratton 5hp?
Q. Working on a 1971 B&S engine and having a hard time figuring out how the carb springs hook-up and just how exactly the governor functions in conjunction with the carb springs. The governor assy. is bolted to the magneto and seems to be powered by the air created by the fins in the flywheel. Could someone please help. Pictures would be great, but if not, a good ol' "This is how you do it speech" would work too. Thanks in advance.

A. The trouble is there are a number of different configurations so a model number and serial number would probably be helpful. I broke down and bought a good small engine book and it has paid for its self many times over. They are available at Napa stores and online as well. Check your local library for a repair book too. good luck

A. Just a suggestion there for you. Could you maybe modify a Honda engine to fit on? A little pricey I know, but they run a counterbalance shaft and are a very well made engine.

What can I do to a 5hp Briggs and Stratton engine to make it run faster?
Q. I hear of drilling more holes in the exhaust and to bore out the piston to make it lighter so that it would move faster so tell me how to make my 5hp Engine better Thank you Very Much
Asked by Kurt - Thu Jul 2 19:33:15 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. well boring out the pison will be expensive. cheap upgrades Bigger exhaust, lighter flywheel (u can get an aluminium one from a lawnmower) bigger carburator, (u can get one from a bigger salvaged engine 7-8hp) remove the governor (don't over revv it because it will blow up) Expensive upgrades Boring out the piston High lift camshafts (gets in more air & petrol into the combustion chamber) Rotax go kart racing carb- (expensive but thats where u get most of ur power) Milling the heads for better compression. Hook it up to a torque converter or CVT scooter transmission.

How many amps does Craftsman riding lawn tractor 12.5hp Briggs and Stratton I/C Gold engine alternator out?
Q. I have found 3 amps 5 amps 9 amp 10 amps all the way to 16 amps...What is the right amperage?
Asked by Wayne - Fri Nov 20 11:33:33 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you are replacing the alternator with something other than the manufacturer's part, the answer to your question is primarily a matter of the charge rate that is acceptable to the battery you have. In general terms, for a small battery of the kind you would most likely have, a charging rate of 2 amps would be ample.

12.5HP Briggs and Stratton lawntractor motor. See details...?
Q. Ive tinkered with lawntractors and engines for a while now, all different sized motors . One in particular, ive noticed has some issues. Its a 12.5HP Briggs and Stratton engine, the two ive owned have self destructed ( by previous owner) - lack of maintenece? Bad assembly/materials? These two were on mid 90's Murray widebody tractors with 40" decks. It just seems odd that this motor failed , when i have more engines alot older then these still running and being Briggs and Stratton engines as well, with no issues. Anyone else have this motor on thier tractor and had any issues with it? I have the model numbers if needed. Kidd I have a couple tractors with 12HP motors and 42" decks and never had any motor issues - it just seems its this… [cont.]

A. Some of those briggs engines are made as cheap as possible. Also a 12 hp engine with a 42" deck is underpowered. This will cause early engine failure. The briggs industrial engines are built better and last longer. It also helps to have a full pressure oil system with a filter. Maintenance is also a big part of the issue. Most people just don't take good care of their lawnmowers. How many do you think change the oil every 25 hrs or even know how many hours are on the engine. I had a 12 hp briggs on a noma tractor that my wife abused for years. Finally a valve seat came out and I shimmed it back in with a strip I cut from a bush light beer can. It is still running today. But, I changed the oil a lot. Bottom line, they are… [cont.]

does anyone know how to fix the linkage on a 5hp briggs and stratton motor?
Q. the throttle cable wont rev engine, am i missing a spring someplace?
Asked by kates78bird - Fri May 21 16:06:39 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. yeah there is a spring down near your govenor.your throttle cable sets tension on the govenor linkage.the governor linkage runs up and controls throttle position through a right angle linkage to your carburetor butterfly.check all ive stated.the cable can be moved to the tapped hole near the choke on the carburetor on the right side as you look at the choke.you will need a screw and washer and since the governor is bypassed, i wouldnt revv it up all the way.

Asked by heath f - Tue Jun 3 11:20:35 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. .025 for the spark plug. Do the following when ever gaping the ignition coil to the magnet in the flywheel. Find or buy an inexpensive set of flat feeler gages long enough to bridge both legs of the ignition coil. Loosen the coil and pull it as far as possible from the flywheel. Using one individual blade .010 -.011 thick place either thickness under both feet of the coil. Roll the flywheel till the magnets face the legs of the coil. The magnetic pull will snap the coil down on the feeler gage and flywheel. Secure the coil with a screwdriver with the feeler gage in place Tighten the screws on the coil. Rotate the flywheel and the feeler gage will spin out. The idea is to get a gap of .010 or .011 thousandths between the flywheel and… [cont.]

Asked by Kinloch K - Mon Jun 19 19:25:22 2006 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First off, the parts are out there. Check local landscape supply and mower dealers, I am sure you will find the parts. I recently found carb rebuild kit for (I think) late 70's toro riding mower, at a mom and pop mower dealer and supply store, and those stores always have tons of old parts in stock( sometimes thats all they have lol). Dont be a cheapskate and risk blowing yourself up, find the parts. Usually, when an exact replacement isnt available, there is a part close enough that can be substituted. A good store wont mind opening up a few and finding a close match. Good Luck

A. !st what happened to your's because any good lawn mower shop can rebuild it cheap too, but supose you bought it minus this no problem, look on line for "small engine repairs" have your engine model number ready and check with them on line or go to your local lawn mower repair shop ask if they can sell you a used carb from a 5 hp briggs and rebuild it for you, your motor is the smae as lawn mowers, small generators, minibikes, the only difference is the block output shaft location down or to the side. this should fix you up. have fun riddin ( I did)

1987 Briggs and stratton 12.5hp Engine revs up and down by its self.?
Q. I got this white lt120 lawnmower with a 2 cylinder opposed twin 12.5hp briggs and stratton engine. The first time i started it i had to have the choke all the way open for it to stay running, even after it was warmed up. so i cleaned the carburetor, the jet was clogged and i removed the gunk from the jet and i cleaned the rest of the carburetor. so i started it up an now it will keep reving up and down by its self and if i pull the choke out half way it will stop this. so i dont know what the problem is. thank you.
Asked by charlie c - Wed Jul 30 16:46:50 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Its called Hunting and Surging. It has one of 2 causes. 1.) Air filter is clogged 2.) fuel supply restriction. The engine trys to go higher in speed and air or fuel is restricted, to the machine slows down. The resulting slowing increases the supply of air or fuel, causing the machine to speed up. And then it keeps going in a vicious circle, till something changes (throttle, load). Best solution is to clean the carb again, and change the fuel filter if it has one.
