What can be the cause of backfiring in 19 hp Briggs and Stratton Lawn mower?
Q. I drained the gas tank, cleaned the float bowl out, and put fresh gas in it. It seemed to help a little bit, but still pops every once in a while. And I put some Gas Line antifreeze (to take water out of gas) and it seemed to help a little more, but I still get the popping from the exhaust.
Asked by jakeboy83 - Sun Aug 26 16:31:11 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It can be caused by too much fuel. You may want to remove the carburetor and clean it properly. Put it back together with a rebuild kit. Another thing could be that the exhaust valve is not closing completly all the time. This can be due to a burned valve, valve out of adjustment(too tight) or carbon build up on the stem. The carbon build up could be caused by the carb needing cleaning and making the engine run too rich.

Where can I order bolts for a muffler on a briggs and stratton lawn mower?
Q. I have tried sears and they keep sending out double washers that are non-refundable. I just need the two bolts (screws) that hold the silver muffler onto my push mowers engine. My mower is only 3 years old so I know other people have had this problem because the bolts constantly needed to be retightened and after one backed out and disappeared the other is now stripped and I can't cut my grass because the muffler has no way of attaching to the engine. My mower model # is 917.388541. I've done a search on this model number and have had no luck as well. It's like it's the only one every made!!! Can someone please help me???

A. If you had ordered the whole new muffler it would have come with the bolts. It's just a muffler on a briggs and stratton (or a Tecumseh, or Honda, or Kohler) you don't have to buy those parts from Sears. You can more easily find the solution to your problem by going to a local dealer that sells and services lawn equipment. Alternately, just take your stripped bolt to a hardware store and buy two new bolts there. Hopefully the threads in the motor aren't stripped, or you'll have to fix that, and I'd bet that even that is beyond your ability, so your probably best of taking the whole discount mower to a professional to correct your problem properly. By any chance are those double washers that they've sent you, look like a flat piece of… [cont.]

A. It is a fuel issue. The governor is trying to keep the engine running. Most likely the carburetor needs to be cleaned.

how long do you think a briggs & stratton lawn mower would run for on one tank?
Q. I think the tank is about a quarter to a half a gallon? does anyone have an idea of how long it will run? I want to cut grass around the block and want to estimate how much i will spend on gas

A. I just purchased a Neuton Mower(I think that is how it is spelled) that runs on a battery. It does a great job, no fumes, no gas--just charge the battery. One charge is a little more than an hour. I have another battery, so one is always charged. Check out the Briggs & Stratton website. You can ask a ? there as well.

A. By "cleaned the carburetor" you did clean all the passages including the metering jet.If you didn't try running some injector cleaner through it(B12,Seafoam, etc,) just add it to the gas and see if that helps(from any auto supply store.

Briggs and stratton lawn mower wont start?
Q. sometimes it will start and run for about 10 minutes then shut off. the spark plug is hot after it stops but it wont spark. but if you wait for a while, sometimes a few days even, it will start again
Asked by a1guitarchick - Sun Jul 11 17:52:10 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If when it stops it doesn't have spark you could have a bad coil. That is common for them to work cold and quit when they get hot. When it quits make sure whether you have spark or not.

Q. It started once, burned off an oil spill (thanks husband), then immediately died and decided not to turn over again.

A. Check the oil level. Most briggs now have a oil safety switch, make sure the oil level is correct. It's better to have a little more then full, if it is under filled it won't start.

A. A B&S Classic 35 is a petrol 4 stroke engine and one that is used as standard in many lawnmowers, generators and pumps. Because it's a 4 stroke, whatever you do, don't add oil to the petrol - it is NOT a 2 stroke engine.

Briggs and Stratton lawn mower help?
Q. Hey, I have a Briggs and Stratton 375 Sprint lawn mower, and I've been having a bit of trouble with it. Basically, after about an hour of usage, it overheats and turns off, and if I start the motor again, after about 5 minutes it stops working again. Once the mower shuts down, a fair bit of smoke comes from the carburettor. I've checked the fuel, that's fine. There's enough oil in the engine (if I need to replace it, do you need to get special lawn mower oil?). And I've had the mower serviced by a mechanic, and he didn't find anything wrong with it. So, long story short the mower starts, overheats, stops, spills smoke, starts, overheats, stops, spills smoke etc, etc. Any ideas on how to fix it?

A. It it has smoke kicking back through the carb...it seems it may have too much oil in it. Check your oil. That engine only uses 20 oz to full mark on dipstick.. I've has customers add a full qt to a walk behind mower and do what you describe.

Briggs and stratton lawn mower throwing out white smoke and oil through muffler
Q. This lawn mower I bought it from sears and of course is a craftsman. The engine is a briggs and stratton 550 series engine.Used it for less than an hour. I know these lawn mower consume 1 ounce per hour per cylinder. Today when I started the engine it did a weird noise like if there was to many oil in the piston. The carb is clean and it has the correct amount of oil. This smoke lasts for about 5 minutes. Also this lawn mower is always covered. also when you start it it throws out smoke and when you are going to see the dipstick it throughs out smoke by there. I think it could be the piston rings or a blown head gasket. The lawn mower is new. The air filter is clean. the spark plug is full of oil. Today when i started it you could here… [cont.]

A. If your engine is consuming an ounce of oil an hour your rings are worn and could produce smoke. Of course too, if it the mower is parked or tilted at a steep angle it will smoke also.

The lawn mower repair person told me that the RPM's needed to be adjusted. Does anyone out there know how this is done, and can I do it myself? Thanks in advance. To: A1cubcadetmechanic. I want to adjust RPM in general but when cutting so most likely at full throttle. It has a Turtle/Rabbit throttle on it. Cut at the Rabbit setting.
