How to start a 14 HP OHV Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine?
Q. Engine will turn over once and then stop. By bumping starter it will turn over again once and stop. Acts like too much compression. Have had this problem in the past and taken to the shop and had repaired several times. Am tired of the expense of repairs. Mower is old (2001)but runs good. Have asked the repair shop what causes this and was told carburation and valve timing. If so how do I adjust valve timing?
Asked by Jus{hug}Me - Sun Jun 15 20:25:31 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. the overhead valve engine requires a valve adjustment occassionally, this is done by removing the valve cover, turning the engine to top dead center on the compression stroke and going past top dead center 1/4". then with a feeler guage you set the valve clearance to .004, you can purchase a repair manual from your nearest Briggs & Stratton dealer that instructs you step by step on how to do this, the manual is less than $20.00 and is a great investment for a doitselfer.

Briggs and Stratton Lawn mower engine help?
Q. When I pull the rope that turns the fly wheel, it sticks when trying to retract the rope. I have to retract and detract to get it free. Do i have to lubricate something on the fly wheel? The engine is a 3.5hp Briggs and Stratton Classic II engine.
Asked by Sabastien G - Tue May 6 03:10:04 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Lubrication will help but it sounds like the spring under the fly wheel has sliped out of place. Not to hard to fix if the cover has screws. If not you will have to take it to a repair shop. If it is a one piece cover over the entire motor it can be tricky to put back together.

Can i use Ngk spark plug in honda and briggs&stratton lawn mower?
Q. the NGK spark plug for the Briggs&Stratton will be similar to Rj19lm will this cause any harm?

A. take the spark plug to your nearest dealer and find out what spark plug options you have, but I think I have seen those in Briggs and Hondas alike. If there is a NGK replacement available, you certainly can use it without causing any harm.

what kind of gasoline for a Briggs & Stratton lawn mower?
Q. Model is unknown. Do I have to mix anything with the gasoline?
Asked by bert r - Sun May 13 00:00:03 2007 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Briggs doesn't make any 2 stroke engines that I know of. So I am 99% sure that You have a four stroke engine which requires straight gasoline. If you happen to have a 2 stroke engine somewhere on the mower it will definitely say "Mix gasoline with Oil" usually either 30 parts gasoline to one part oil or 30:1, 40:1, or 50:1. Use 85-89 and you'll be fine. The mower will need an oil and filter change plus a blade sharpening at the end of the season. Actually it's best to drain the oil and gasoline at the end of the year, but in case you can't just add fuel stabilizer over the winter. Change the spark plug every other year. These are basic guidelines for most mowers.

A. By "cleaned the carburetor" you did clean all the passages including the metering jet.If you didn't try running some injector cleaner through it(B12,Seafoam, etc,) just add it to the gas and see if that helps(from any auto supply store.

Is it possible to install a turbo charger on a briggs and stratton 10hp lawn mower engine?
Q. i have a 1976 wheel horse with a 10 hp briggs and stratton and i was wondering if i could get a turbo to bolt up to it and how hard it would be to plum the lines and get it set right.
Asked by 1950BUICKSPECIAL - Tue Mar 24 15:35:20 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I'm sure it's possible to build something to fit, but I don't think that the engine will put out enough exhaust pressure to turn the turbine fast enough to give you any benefit, also your engine is probably fairly high compression so you may overboost it, if it does work.

A. you have gelled fuel in your carb. this happens all the time when you leave gas in your mower all winter. take the bowl out of the carb and clean the bolt that holds it in place. it will have little holes in the bottom. make sure you change the oil and sharpen the blades too. also, make sure you drain all the gas when you put the mower away this fall.

Are all new Briggs & Stratton Lawn Mower motors worthless now?
Q. I bought a new Bolens riding lawn mower with a 15.5 hp Briggs & Stratton motor with a 2 year warrenty on it. Well just two weeks after my 2 year warrenty was up I started my mower and blew a 3 inch hole through the motor. I am an aircraft mechanic and tuned up and changed the oil in it every year. I heard that Briggs & Stratton are now made in China and from my experience I believe it now. I was lucky and found a 1992 Montgomery Ward Industrial,Commercial 7 speed 42 inch riding mower with a 12.5 hp Briggs & Stratton I/C Quite Industrial Commercial moter for $150. What I want to know is why is my current 17 year old lawn mower still going strong and new ones today only seem to last for two years. Like I said I am an aircraft mechanic..… [cont.]

A. Find out where B$S head office is. Take photos of your damaged engine in detail.. Write a description and history to them and ask them if their current engines are doing this and why did this one malfunction when in a normal operation mode and did not run out of oil for some reason.. Perhaps an oil leak occurred and the engine unexpectedly ran out of oil.. You are an aircraft mechanic and can understand that something serious went wrong to inflict such damage.. Manufacturers usually appreciate feed back and you never know.. You might get a bonus.

Briggs Stratton lawn mower idling issues?
Q. I have a Briggs Stratton 4 HP 22 inch throttle free design lawn mower, model number 10A902, type 2180, code 02111552. It was running fine then all of a sudden while mowing my lawn it started idling up and down. I've had a few people look at it with no resolve and have no clue on what the problem could be. Anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong or similar experiences? The carburetor has been cleaned, have put in new gas, primed it while running, checked the filters and nothing has helped. Would appreciate any other ideas? And the spring on the throttle is still there. I don't know where to go from here???
Asked by jenick99 - Mon May 25 15:34:39 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Check to see that the air filter is clean. Dirty filters wil cause inconsistent idling and even cause the mower to quit all together by impeding air flow.

How do I adjust the RPM's on a Briggs & Stratton Lawn Mower Engine?
Q. I have a Craftsman Lawn Mower (Model 917.3788644) and it has a Briggs and Stratton motor in it. It still starts on the first pull but has seemed to "slow down". The lawn mower repair person told me that the RPM's needed to be adjusted. Does anyone out there know how this is done, and can I do it myself? Thanks in advance. To: A1cubcadetmechanic. I want to adjust RPM in general but when cutting so most likely at full throttle. It has a Turtle/Rabbit throttle on it. Cut at the Rabbit setting.

USE a HD-30, that's a high detergent straight 30 weight above 40 degrees F. Use a multi weight conventional like 5w-30 or 10w-30 below 40. OR just use a 5w-30 or 10w-30 synthetic all year round.
