What is torque when reading car specs?
Q. I see alot of torque specs like 200@400, or something like this. Please explain.
Asked by Victoria Y - Wed Jul 16 06:07:03 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Torque is a twisting force. It is the power output of an engine at one specific point in time. The first number, 200 in your expample, is the amount of torque. In America is is measured in foot/pounds. The second number, 400 in your example, is the RPM where that torque number occurs. So assuming American measurement it would mean the engine is producing 200 ft/lbs of torque at 400 RPMs. Horsepower is another measure of engine power, but it is based on torque. Horsepower is the abiltiy to do work over a period of time. Other things are taken into account, but it is based on torque so the two will follow each other to some degree. Torque comes on first because it is the instant twisting force. Horsepower is built as you get going… [cont.]

A. Use new head bolts you cannot reuse them. The torque specs come with the new bolts. You torque them and then give them a exact degree of twist which stretches them thus you cannot reuse them.

TORQUE SPECS for my Sears lawnmower?
Q. I am replacing the Breather Assemby on my 5.5 HP Sears lawnmower (Briggs & Stratton motor.) How much TORQUE should I apply on these two screws holding on this breather assembly? I have no service manual to guide this repair, so I please ask for experience or service repair specifics in NUMBERS (value.) Thanks.

A. There really is no torque ratings for screws. If you are worried about these screws vibrating loose purchase some LOCK-TITE. Apply a small amount to the screw threads and tighten down the breather assembly.
